Yaaasss to the pattern matching! |
So, I LOVE THIS DRESS. Well, actually I wear it as a duster , I like it better because of the all over print. I mean I toiled with this dress and then when I got the front matched up, oh snap the bottom print doesn’t match (insert eye roll). I was like, you know what, I already playing fabric Tetris, I know how to match patterns, so I’m good!
I created a column of color with the black, RTW leggings and cami, great back drop for the print. |
I didn’t want to ruin the pattern so I threw around the idea of snaps and alternative ways to close this dress/ duster. I got some great ideas from some of my Facebook groups and IG. Someone told me to to put the buttons on the inside! I love this idea and I want to try it one day. Some other ideas were using hook and eyes, snaps and finally covered buttons. I went with covered buttons and that’s what went on the cuff and at the waist although it’s not necessary. The covered button kit I had was being a jerk and made something easy, a pain, I had the whole family saying ” give it here let me do it” insert quadruple eye roll. Now, I know how to cover buttons, I’ve made covered button earrings and I’ve done it before, I think the plastic holder is warped, or something, any who more drama for another time…
This Ankara fabric was purchased from the Sew Much Talent retreat this summer, sometimes I forget how bold Ankara can be, I love it, but also I have to be mindful of print and pattern placement. My girl Femi from Lee Lou Designs 720 always has the posh and beautiful Ankara fabric and I have two more pieces in the stash. I’m a lover of sweaters, jackets, and any type of toper so a shirtdress is versitile. I did my normal adjustments of an FBA, I also lengthened the bodice two inches. I did a broad shoulder adjustment and left off the sleeve tabs. I’ve made this pattern as a shirt and shirtdress, I just realized I had another button up I forgot to blog (oops!)
What’s next, these darn pants (quadruple eye roll). I have some pictures of the muslin and I’m going to work on my crotch curve “template” to see if I can get things a little better before making a wearable. Pants are super easy to sew, but they can be challenging to fit because you can’t see the back of yourself. I have this bluetooth clicker thingy for my phone so I’m putting it to good use.

Yes, thanks for the suggestion, I'm super happy with it!

Gorgeous as always! You've inspired me to try dusters, but the Cambria one was kind of a bust (sleeves badly designed). Maybe I'll try this!

I think any shirtdress or jacket with the right tweaks can be converted into a duster , oh and sweaters too!

I love it! It's beautiful and perfect as a duster!
I have the same challenge with some of the Ankara prints I've purchased. So I just get the print on the bodice to match and move on! Lol!
