Pattern Review: Simplicity 8641 and Sew House Seven
Hi! So, I think I sewed this up sometime last month and I’m now getting pictures. I really enjoy when my daughter takes my pictures. I don’t edit photos and I take just a few to get the look of the garment, this means it goes a lot faster if she does it. It usually takes just a few minutes to get front, back, side and a few silly shots. I tried with the tripod, it’s just not my thing although I know it’s not that hard. I guess I’ll work on it (insert eye roll), I need to get a remote, anyone have recommendations for an Iphone compatible tripod and remote?
I’ve been working on my pencil skirt and making something couture/bespoke/etc is a lot of work. But, it’s worth it, I will never need to figure out my fit again for a skirt! Also, I’m working on loosing weight and I’ll be all too happy to redraft my block or make adjustments when that time comes, but for now I needed a skirt that fit. Next week, I’ll reveal my wearable muslin and my final thoughts on the class, the process and the future. I think that will be a two-parter and then you will get to see the fruits of my labor (I’m making another skirt now in fashion fabric) and some other things I’m thinking of making.
I didn’t think this pattern was my style, but I love it! I’m not a bib person and the last thing I want is to look like I’m wearing an apron, that is a NO GO! This turned out so nice and I think it will be even cuter in a drapey fabric. The bib look seems to be back and this is probably the extent of me wearing a bib in a garment. Now, I’ll never say never, but for now this is good.
I did press but I can’t not sit down! lol!!! |
I just recently cleaned out my closet and I swear it was at least 13 bags of memades and ready to wear that I let overtake my closet. There were shoes in those bags but the point I want to make is, I really don’t want to waste time on trendy things that I wont wear. Some of the stuff that I donated hasn’t been worn in two plus years (insert double eye roll). I plan to wear this lots and if I see the need for another, maybe I will dress it up a bit in a wool blend for winter, but I probably wont make another casual version. Now, it’s not because I don’t like the pattern, but more so because I strategically picked a neutral color that will be a good addition to the wardrobe.

Pattern Description:
This Misses’ jumper dress pattern from Sew House Seven features a bib
jumper with suspenders and back drawstring to achieve a perfect fit.
SEWING LEVEL:Beginner (no closures, minimal fitting and simple design)
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, they were easy, I didn’t see any issues or errors.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like the on trend design, I like the different lengths and bib shapes and as always, it’s always nice to get a designer’s pattern from big four pattern companies. Finally, it looks effortless but if you’re not careful it can look like an apron so styling is a must. No real dislikes but the ties are a little short for those with a thicker waist.
Fabric Used: Olive stretch twill
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
This pattern came up to size 24, not the most size inclusive but for big 4 it is what it is. I made view D and cut a straight 24. My hips fall just outside the body measurement for the size 24 so I added 1.5″ of total ease to the hip tapering to nothing at the waist. I used a stretch twill but it was stable and didn’t drape as well as a chambray so I may have added an additional inch to the circumference but not really needed.
I trimmed 2″ off the hem, this is probably a little longer than midi on the average (and the pattern envelope shows that), because it felt midi on me (I’m 5’9″) before hemming so this maybe long for some. If you have a bigger bust, you may want to make adjustments for the level of coverage you may want so I would say tissue fit would give you an idea, it’s casual so you just want to make sure it hits where you are comfortable at the top and sides of the front.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes, why not, it’s a cute design and it feels young and modern, not your grandmother’s bib dress! I would make it again in wool for the winter if the need arises, but I would probably line it if I used wool.

Thanks for this. I am relatively new to sewing and I am currently struggling with the straps – mine look too thin. And the zip – I don't get the invisible zip instructions. Any advice?

My version didn't have the invisible zipper and the straps seemed ok for me, you can always widen the straps. I think it will be OK if you widen the straps although I believe the straps are one size for all sizes. As for the invisible zipper, here's a tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vA8l0xPa1wg. Good luck!
