Same Fit Done Thick: Phillip Lim Inspired Tie Front Top

Have you ever seen something in the store and though, I really like that, but it doesn’t come in your size?  I mean your dress size or your wallet size?  I know, I have!  I’m not a big fashion follower, I don’t read many fashion magazines and I don’t have a vision board of runway fashion that I love but, when I see something, it inspires me!  I get inspiration from all over, sometimes it’s a fellow blogger, T.V. , pattern, or street styles.  I used to watch the “stories” back in the day and I will tell you, day time soap operas have the best fashion! also, my news anchors have some nice clothes.

I was on the Nordstrom’s site browsing and really ya’ll, sometimes I go look to see what’s out there.  and I saw a few pieces and I said, “I can make that”!  Have you ever looked at something and said, I can do that?  Maybe you make an exact replica or maybe you put your own spin on it, but I think most sewist have said this before.  I used to think most things were over priced in the stores, but as a sewist, I now know that some stuff is expensive and worth it.  When you factor in  fabric, design, and the name sometimes it’s worth the price tag.  Don’t get me wrong, not everything is worth it’s price tag, but sometimes you have to give credit where credit is due and pay the price for a stunning piece.

I’ve been evaluating my blog and wondering, do I just want to review patterns exclusively?  What else do I want to offer?  I don’t want to wait until the new year, I want to start to plan and implement the things I want to do now.  I’ve dabbled in the “same fit done thick” posts before but I wasn’t consistent.  Well, I’m going to remedy that, I’m not waiting until Monday, or next month or the new year, I’m making it happen now!  The first time I did #Samefitdonethick on the blog was here, it was for the Barganista challenge on pattern review.

The inspiration for this garment was from Phillip Lim and I found a link to the top here.  I like the tie waist and I thought it was a great way to add waist definition.  I’m not a fan of the sleeve length and the width of the ties at the side seams so my version was scaled down a bit to fit my body and life style, the top on the model seems to drown her a bit.  My version has a slight v neck, three quarter length sleeves , slimmer waist ties in a chambray fabric.  You can read about the pattern I used here.

Inspiration New Look 6519

How much did this cost?
Pattern: $4
Fabric: $10 (local fabric remnant)
Total: $14 (I saved over $260!!!)

I think I’ve captured the true essence of this top, stay tuned for more inspiration, planning and pattern review posts!
