Pattern Remakes- October Edition

One of my goals has been to go back through my “wearable muslins” and remake them.  What’s a muslin and when should you do one?  Check this blog post out from Tilly and the Buttons.  I spend quite a bit of time making adjustments and it seems like such a waste to only make them once.  In comes the pattern round up, I’m going to consolidate all my remakes from Instagram, Facebook and my camera roll.  I think there’s value in remakes and the styling of what you make so you get more bang for your buck with your pattern and garments.  I think I’ll try this once a month, but I wont commit to anything right now, I’ll just go with it LOL!!  If you follow my Instagram, you will see how I style my makes and get multiple wears out of my patterns.

Do you remember this faux wrap dress M6884?  I made it again in a light weight stretch velvet.  I used my original review and the adjustments I wanted to make to whip this bad boy up.  You can read the original review here and it’s a winner!  As a note, I didn’t lengthen the ties as much as I’d would have liked because I ran out of fabric.  I used this stretch velvet before here, I didn’t know what to make out of the fabric when I purchased it so I didn’t have exactly what was needed for the dress; in spite of it all, I made it work! **Note** this jacket tho!  I love it, and it goes great with the dress, here’s the review for it!

New Look 6519–  This pattern got a bunch of wear, I’ve made this three time already.   Here’s the original review.  I made view A in a African wax print, the only changes I made was adding five inches to the hem.

I was excited to see all the cardigans out there for the #Cosycardichallenge on Instagram.  I decided to join in and try the Blackwood cardigan by Helen’s closet, you can see the original review here.  By the way, my mom has now taken possession of the original Blackwood cardigan.

I remade the Blackwood cardigan in a mustard ponte knit.  Keep an eye out on Instagram so you can see how I style it.  I made three changes
to the original.  I did not add the two inches to the hem like I did to the original cardigan, although I
usually need it.  I like how this cardigan’s shorter length hits at the high hip now.  I did a two inch
bicep adjustment and I graded up 5/8” at the side seams to help
accommodate the increase to the sleeve width.

M6996– You remember this pattern from the Glam duster? No, you can read the original review  here’s.  I pulled it out to make it in a berry colored ponte knit.  I made view A without lengthening it and I narrowed the shoulders a bit.  This cardigan does run on the larger size so I would make sure the shoulders are where they should be when you do your tissue fit or mock up/muslin.  I’m not a fan of the collar on this and I’m not sure why, I think maybe adding a facing would remedy that.

Apparently, I never blogged M6844, it’s on my Instagram but never made it to the blog.  I remember now, this was reviewed sooo many times online and on pattern review, I decided I didn’t have anything of value to add since all body shapes and sizes reviewed the pattern.  I made view B, I did my normal cutting XL at shoulders and neckline and grading up 5/8″ from bust to hem.  Fabric was a Black ponte knit and a psychedelic sweater knit.  Pattern instructions are good and there were no errors.  There are so many reviews out there, here’s one from the Crafty Gemini and this is one of the first reviews I saw when researching this pattern last year. Ohh, and you remember this vintage Simplicity dress done up in African print don’t you?  No, no problem, here’s the review.

I think most of these patterns will be retired for a while.  I’m thinking about a longer Blackwood cardigan and maybe making another cardigan in black to replace M6844.  You’re right, maybe I should make a long back Blackwood cardigan!  Then, I can kill two birds with one stone!  You guys are so smart!  Soo, other than that, I’m moving on.  I have roughly ten Indie PDF patterns (I’m not with that taping or expensive pattern life) I want to sew and over 600 big 4 patterns that I feel should get some use.  These are all good beginner patterns and they have tons of reviews for each of them so I think they could easily become someone’s TNT (Tried and True) pattern.

Until next month’s round up (cross my fingers) I have a few things on the horizon: I have some holiday dresses I should start on and I have a few more layering pieces to include a coat (Yikes) and finally, a few items that need to be photographed.  Stay tuned!

I want to hear from you, are you King/Queen of the remake or do you make your patterns once and move on?

I really like your blog! You had a wonderful October, and that mustard Blackwood cardigan is beautiful! I just bought a mustard French terry, but haven't decided what to use it for. M6996 is cute on you as well. I look forward to seeing what you will do in November. 🙂
