Pattern Review: New Look 6514-The Robe of Many Colors

I hadn’t participated in the #sewyourview challenge on Instagram in a while so I decided to put to use some cute fabric in my stash to use. I also wanted something fun and different to wear for my birthday so it was a twofer! That feels weird to say, I don’t have a large stash so, to shop in it was a good feeling. I originally made the longer view and in the fabric, it looked like a priestly robe. I did a poll and everyone voted to cut it and I agreed. The pictures aren’t a clear as I’d like, but we get the gist of it.

Pattern Description:
hemline variations for multiple ways to make it unique. Choose between
different sleeve styles and trim ideas including tassels and fringe for a
festival vibe.

SEWING LEVEL: BEGINNER
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, it’s a straight forward pattern with just a few pieces, there was nothing complicated in the instructions. I believe a beginner could follow along with no issues.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like the different views for a jacket or vest and the different trim options. I also like the neckline of the jacket. I don’t know if I like the way the longer view, view A doesn’t go straight down from hip to hem, it kind of has a swing curved hem that takes up more fabric and looked a little weird in my print. It’s an open jacket without closures so that’s a plus and it doesn’t have any darts but it shapes OK mostly due to the “swing” of the hem. I feel the neck facing could be a little longer, or you can actually use binding for the neckline, but those are my preferences.
Fabric Used:Cotton/linen blend
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I did a forward shoulder adjustment, I graded up a 1/4 inch on each pattern piece for more ease at the bust and waist. I did a full bicep adjustment and I cut 16 inches from the hem after trying it on. I also omitted the trim since my pattern was so busy.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes, I plan to shorten it and see how I like a crop jacket.

Well, I actually like the long one as well! I don't think you look like a priest, I think you look like an elegant lounger! But the shorter length is lovely as well. I absolutely think this fabric and pattern are perfect together! This will go with everything!

Thank you! I'm pleased with the new length as well and I hope I get lots of wear out of it.
