Pattern Review:B5211+ dress hack= Tunic

Sometimes you just want something easy to sew, this is it.  I’m learning how to fit the flat pattern and make design adjustments.  I made this tunic and a dress on Saturday and I like the way both turned out.  This is an oldie but goodie pattern that has been reviewed 40+ times on pattern Review.

Pattern Description:

Dresses have back neck opening with button and thread loop closure, extended shoulders, side pockets and topstitching detail. A: Front upper and lower sections. B: Self-belt. C: Gathered sleeve with elastic casing, length 2″ above mid-knee.

Pattern Sizing:

16-24

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?

Yes and no, I made it a tunic.

Were the instructions easy to follow?

Yes

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

I like the drop shoulders and boat neck, also like the easy construction.

Fabric Used:

African Wax Print

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:

I cut a 22 neckline and shoulders graded to a 24 at the hip. I did a forward shoulder adjustment. I also chopped nine inches off the bottom to make a tunic. I left open the side seams below the mark for the pockets down to the hem for side vents. I used single fold bias tape to finish the neckline and sleeve hems because I ran out of fabric for the facing. I also sewed the center back completely and did not leave a key hole opening at the back neckline since it went over my head easily.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?

Yes, I have already made a dress I need to photograph.

Conclusion:

Easy pattern with minimal fitting and no zippers, buttons or setting in sleeves. Different fabrics with varying drapes will give different looks, a must try.
