Pattern Review: S8219+ Faux Fur Vest

Faux fur is all the rage, I
think.  I see it everywhere, but I didn’t
jump right on the bandwagon.  The faux
fur garments I’ve seen in the stores are nice, but to furry, if that makes sense.  The pile (fur) is usually too long and furry
like a dog.  I guess I like the idea of
faux fur but not all of the fur.  I found
this faux fur, mixed media type fabric at Joann’s; its fur was pretty short and
it had some nice dimension to it, I really like it.  So, here’s to the not so furry, faux fur vest…

Pattern Description:

This lined vest sized XS to XL is available to sew in three lengths, making
it the perfect addition to your fall wardrobe. Featured in faux fur but can be
made in other fabrics such as wool. Have fun with the lining by using a pop of
color or a favorite print. Bonus infinity scarf pattern and instructions
included. Simplicity sewing pattern.  I
made view A.

Pattern Sizing:

XS-XL, I made a XL which is my normal big 4 size.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were
done sewing with it?

Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow?

Yes

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

I like that it’s an easy pattern and
they give you tips on how to work with Faux Fur (Nap, marking, sewing, etc…)

Fabric Used:

Faux Fur from Joann’s fabric

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:

I originally sewed view A, it was
too long for me, I’ve seen the longer vest on plus sized ladies, but I didn’t
like where it hit me on my thigh, right under my hip.  I feel it just added to my girth and with the
extra fur, it made me feel like I had on a coat and it wasn’t flattering on
me.  I cut 5 inches from the bottom to
make more of a cropped vest which was probably more like view C and I like that
much, much better.  I adjusted the side
seams until I got the shape I liked so it was probably in between a size L and
XL on the side seams.  I wanted it to be
semi loose fitted as loose fitted tops/jackets make me feel like I’m wearing a
tent.

Would you sew it again?

No, I don’t think so.  I only need one faux fur vest, I try to focus
on work horses in my wardrobe, and this is a good special piece.

Would you recommend it to others?

Yes, give working with faux fur a try, the pattern instructions give you
lots of good info on working with fur.
