I totally think the natural progression for a sewist/seamstress/sewer/etc.. is making your own patterns.  OK, no, I’m not getting ready to drop a pattern line, but I think there’s some value in understanding fundamentally how patterns work so it’s easier to modify.  Now, that’s just my thinking, I have an analytical mind and I think it terms of processes and more importantly building on knowledge.  I’m not one of those people that can do something without ever being exposed to it unless it’s similar to what I’ve already done before hence my ridiculous pattern stash which at least half of is basics that I should know how to do by…

This is my new blogger pose, lol! I really like this top!  At first, I wanted to make a dress and I’m thinking I may soon!  I always look through the see and sew patterns and New Look at Joann’s and Walmart because I’m cheap and I have a pattern problem.  Actually, they have a lot of out of print designs, so they are less expensive than ordering from the website.  See and Sew have a wide range of sizes and I truthfully think they are Butterick patterns reborn.  They are not exactly like their regular Butterick patterns (they change the model and sometimes they adjust the number of views…

  • Fitting My Pencil Skirt and Simplicity 8601 Top- Fail

    June 12, 2018 / 8 Comments

As a part of my work wear wardrobe,  I wanted  a pencil skirt.  I wanted this pencil skirt to be woven with minimal stretch and fit like a glove, easy, right?  Welp, in search of a skirt in RTW (ready to wear), I found tons of plus size pencil skirts, but none that were non stretch.  What I saw was scuba, neoprene and ponte.  I guess that’s a good way to get a fit, add spandex.  I don’t have anything against this, I actually own a few but I was looking for something more tailored. This is a basic pencil skirt, it’s very similar if not identical to this one (mine came…

Soooo, I wore this and never blogged about it, I know, right!  I try to take photos and blog about what I make before I wear it.  This way, I wont forget, but with Instagram, I periodically scroll through to see if an item has been reviewed or not.  I try to get nice outdoor photos with themes and corresponding wall colors, but truthfully that’s unrealistic for me.  I don’t want to spend all day taking pictures (insert eye roll) lol.  I just want to take front back and side photos with a few extra poses for good measure.  I think people want to see how the garment looks on…

Don’t judge me, I’ve had this cut out for at least 2.5 months.  What had happen was, lol…  For reals, when I “put stuff away” I forget about them, this was in a bin of “things to sew” that I totally forgot about.  As a matter of fact, that bin is being used as an additional end table in my sewing room so, there’s that lol!!!  And, I already have an end table in the sewing room, so yeah, there are a few things coming that I forgot about in the box.  This is what happens when I try to organize, I forget about stuff!  No, I’m pretty organized, but…

  • DIY Square Neck Concord T Shirt Dress Hack

    June 5, 2018 / 8 Comments

Are you sick of seeing me in T-shirt dresses yet?  No, great, I don’t have any plans on stopping, T-shirt dresses are awesome!  I recommend everyone that sews get a few TNT (tried and true) patterns.  There’s nothing like just getting in there, cutting the fabric and sewing it up, no surprises!  I can’t tell you what your machine will do, but if you haven’t fluctuated too much on your weight, the pattern should be good to go.  So, speaking of fluctuating, I tend to measure myself almost every time I make a new pattern, if its more on the fitted side.  I do a quick measurement of my bust,…

Anytime Jenny releases a pattern, I jump on it.  I’m all about support because I can’t complain about stuff and then not support people when they try to meet the need.  I’m getting pretty good at fit and I can and I have adjusted patterns to fit my body but I still purchase patterns designed to make sewing and fit easier.  I’m excited to see all the possibilities of sewing, it’s still a challenge, it’s still exciting and it’s still frustrating!  The chest is a bit snug on this top, I measured myself but I still find it snug in the upper chest area.  I graded up to 20 for…

This is a quick post to show you my new tunic.   I really like this pattern, I’m not sure if it’s the great shaping from the princess seams or what, but I like it!  I have one more in the plans and I hope to get it done soon!  I want to try my hand at adding some trim and maybe even a 3/4 sleeve.  I reviewed this top here and here. I used a Joel Dewberry Poplin precut (I HEART pre cuts) from Fabric Mart.  The only change I made was to make the slit side seam view and shorten the front pattern piece four inches.  I guess I…

  • T Shirt Dress Hack- Fit and Flare

    May 25, 2018 / 6 Comments

I got the bright idea to make an adjustment to a current T- shirt dress.  I’m soo, trying to get better at pattern hacking, but it takes some work.   I know that most patterns are just basic blocks that have design details, but I’m not a designer so I don’t think like a designer.  Now, I know what I like when I see it and when looking at RTW I do see things I like that look pretty simple to recreate.  Some stuff has me scratching my head on how to make it and other things are very simple.  How about those shoes? I didn’t start sewing to be a…

  • Mother’s Day Gift Poolside Tote

    May 17, 2018 / 4 Comments

When my mom saw my first Poolside tote, she said really liked it, I thought it would be a good gift to make her and a good palette cleanser.  I make a lot of garments and sometimes it’s nice to make something else to get your creative juices flowing.  I was surprised, but I really did like making the tote bag.  I’m not a complete convert, but I think it’s good to make different things. Ijjo The first Poolside tote I made was for the May/June issue of Sewn Magazine.  I painted the tote and went through a series of methods to get the look I was going for.  I’m…
