Pattern Review: Burda 6749+ the perfect T-Shirt

I’d like to keep track of all my ” TNT” patterns on the blog in some way.  TNT stands for tried and true, and in the spirit of classic, well fitting garments, I will try to identify which patterns work with my normal flat pattern adjustments.  If I have to recreate the pattern in every way, the pattern itself wouldn’t be a TNT, in my opinion, but rather a base for your own pattern.

I’m not interested in drafting patterns, but I am interested in learning how to identify “good bones” when I look at the technical drawings of a pattern.  I pick up patterns that are popular on pattern review and some of my Facebook groups, but there are some real gems out there that have never had published reviews.  I know that there are tons of folks out there that sew and just don’t post their reviews online.

I really like Pattern Review and all the contest they have, I’ve joined a few and I always find so much inspiration and pride it what the home sewers are producing, we rock!  Although I won’t be participating in Pattern Reviews wardrobe Sudoku,  the concept is very interesting, the concept of the capsule wardrobe.  I see lots of “capsule” wardrobes on Pinterest and around the internet and I like the idea of quality of quantity. 

I pulled the definition of capsule wardrobe from Wikipedia (don’t judge):

Capsule wardrobe is a term coined by Susie Faux, the owner of a London boutique called “Wardrobe” in the 1970s. According to Faux, a capsule wardrobe
is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don’t go out
of fashion, such as skirts, trousers, and coats, which can then be
augmented with seasonal pieces.

This upcoming spring summer from what I see will be all about the sleeves, I see Pantone colors and some of the textures from the runway, so for me, I think the classics with pops of color and trendy pieces are the way to go.  Maybe I can reduce my pattern stash by half if I stick to what works for me (fingers crossed).

So, on to the review of my TNT T-Shirt pattern:

Pattern Description:

This style has been especially designed for a close fit and for
jersey fabric. The classic pattern can be used for a wide array of
attractive tops, both in plain or print fabric. Sew your favorites with
either short or long sleeves. Recommended fabrics: Two-way stretch
jersey.

20-34

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?

Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow?

Well, for Burda they were simple and to the point.  Burda instructions although in English are not typical like the big 4 sewing pattern instructions, not bad, just different.  If you look at the drawings and understand basic construction, this won’t be difficult.  

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

 
No dislikes, I like the scoop neckline, I also love that this pattern comes with a pattern piece for the neckband, I really dislike turning and top stitching a knit neckline.

Fabric Used: 

Rayon Jersey from Fabric mart, fabric was a remnant from a fabric bundle.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:

 *Cut size 22 at shoulder and neckline, graded to a size 26 at bust, waist and hem.  I don’t ordinarily grade out to a 26, but I wanted the additional ease because it was drafted to be close fitting.

* I added 2 inches to the front and back pattern pieces at the lengthen/shorten line, I’m 5’9″ so this is a standard adjustment

*I cut the size 22 sleeve and graded to 24 at the seam to account for the ease I added to the bodice pattern pieces.

*Finished all seams with my serger.

Would you sew it again? 

Yes, I plan to make more of view A and also make the long sleeved view b.

Would you recommend it to others?

Yes, I think it’s a simple design, very flattering and easy to make, give this one a try.


Notes for the next go round:

I will interface the sleeve and hem allowances before using the twin needles, I will also stabilize the shoulder.
