Utilitarian Vibe: McCalls 7906
This outfit came together better than I imagined! I have a Pinterest board devoted to outfit ideas and style. Sometimes I take the inspiration literally, but most times I use what I have to get the look I’m going for. I knew I wanted a utilitarian vibe with this skirt, I’ve seen this on the runway and utilitarian and all the beiges I like because they are versatile. I’m big on balance, I’m a rectangle/figure eight body type and I can be particular when it comes to silhouette. I know some people out there think “flattering” is a dirty word, but I like to enhance the features in ways that…

Another Springfield Top and A Slow Sewing Project
In an effort to blog more, I make more than I blog here’s a quick make from Cashmerette. I made the Springfield top quite a bit and it’s my go to for sleeveless designs. The armhole and neckline fit great so I don’t have to worry about that. The only thing I changed from previous versions is I did my forward shoulder adjustment and I lowered the bust dart. Initially, I lowered the bust dart an inch, but I need more like 5/8″. Finally, I graded to the 20 at the hip as per my measurements at the side seams only to give more room at the hip. When I…

The Lazy Suit
HI! I told you last week that I had an event to go to and I wanted to make a jacket, wait, was it you I was talking to last week? No, anyway, it had to be IG LOL. Soo, I had a semi formal event to attend and I wanted to sew a jacket to go with my Style Sew Me Charita dress. The catch was, the fabric had to be from my stash, (insert eye roll). Who set this catch? (looks around), I guess it was me, lol. I have some stuff in the stash that’s a few years old. I know for some of you OG’s that’s…

Is It A Fail? McCalls 7817
What had happen was! You know I have some drama if I start a sentence like that LOL. No, really, what happened was, I wanted to participate in an Instagram sewing challenge highlighting black sewing pattern designers. I went looking through my stash for a pattern made by a black designer. First of all, there are a hand full, out of the hundreds of patterns I have, I had maybe ten that were from people of color (quadruple eye roll). I chose a Khalia Ali’s pattern because I already had it and I wanted something modern from her, I’ll just say that. I also wanted to try an Indi…

Style Sew Me Charita Dress
Can I say, I love this dress! This is the second garment I’ve made from Style Sew Me Patterns, the first was the Madison cardigan. I really, really wanted to make a pattern from a black designer because there are so few out there (insert eye roll). I also wanted to sew an indie pattern, ugh, also not many black indie sewing pattern makers! This dress fit the bill, how did I pick? I started with the dress because I didn’t see many reviews for the Charita dress also, a bodycon dress, sure! I want to support an independent pattern maker because I know it’s a lot of work and…

Finally, Pants! Simplicity 8056 and Another Simplicity 8014
Finally, I finished my pants! Well, I’m happy with the outcome and it was a long time coming. I actually could have finished these like two weeks ago, but apparently me and the embroidery machine have been having a little affair (insert shocked face)! These pants are a wearable muslin, I like wearables because like I’ve said before, I like to wear a garment to work, sit down and stand up to get a good idea of my adjustments. Also, some fabric tends to bag out and then I over correct to fit it and then it’s tight. To remedy that, I try and get quality fabric and not over…

What I’ve been up to: Cleaning up and Machine Embroidery
So, what have I been up to? Well, I’m still working on my pants, I have the second version of the pattern traced out and I hope to sew it up sometime this week. I took some time off from the pants to really get my fabric stash together. I felt like my space, desires and fabric were not connected lol, can you relate? I had lots of fabric that I’ve gotten in NYC, Pennsylvania and Denver along with my online purchases shoved in a closet (I don’t have before pictures, ughh, insert eye roll). My hubby moved his office downstairs and freed up the closet for me, what did…

Muslin #1 Simplicity 8056
I’m tackling pants, I’m also working on my pants block. Whatttt! I know (insert eye roll), let me explain, I’m taking a pants block class and before I did that, I wanted to know if adjusting a pair of commercial pattern was comparable. I know it’s not, but not everyone wants to draft a pair of pants or create a block/sloper! I’m actually tempted to either have a friend fit and draft me a pair or wait until the next sewing camp/retreat lol… Sew camps and sewing retreats are perfect for this. I think the issue for me is not being able to manipulate the back, this was the issue…

Another version of Simplicity 8014
Yaaasss to the pattern matching! So, I LOVE THIS DRESS. Well, actually I wear it as a duster , I like it better because of the all over print. I mean I toiled with this dress and then when I got the front matched up, oh snap the bottom print doesn’t match (insert eye roll). I was like, you know what, I already playing fabric Tetris, I know how to match patterns, so I’m good! I created a column of color with the black, RTW leggings and cami, great back drop for the print. I didn’t want to ruin the pattern so I threw around the idea of snaps and…
